Online reputation management is the managing of a company or person’s online persona, or their online reputation.  What do people find when they search for you or your company on search engines or social networks? If you’re an important local figure or company, and derogatory or negative sites come up ahead of your own website in the search engines, then you have a very serious problem. It isn’t easily solved, because many times you cannot press charges against the perpetrators because of freedom of speech, parody laws or offshore hosting.

Even if you were able too, it’s probably not a smart approach anyway. Instead, what you need to do is virtually stuff the search engines and ensure that the top matches are positive, and put forth reinforced information that you control. That’s what one aspect of online reputation management is. This is refered to as Reactive Online Reputation Management.  Online Reputation can be categorized into three separate categories. These categories are:

Preemptive – This form of reputation management has to do with establishing the reputation for a person or business that is just getting started into the digital realm. It includes building a strong reputation and fortifying the position of the person or business in search engines and social networks.

Clockwork – Reputation management meant to keep a person or a business’s image positive in the public eye is coined Clockwork reputation management. This is meant for people or businesses that are already established and need to maintain their already positive reputation in the topmost levels of the search engines.

Reactive – If a person or a business has gotten a bad reputation for any reason, online, then reactive measures are put into place for reputation management. With superior marketing and self-promotion, the goal is to secure the topmost levels of the search engines with sites that you control. This serves to shove the derogatory information further down in the search results so it cannot be easily found.

All three of these measures for online reputation management is extremely labor intensive and any approach that is subtle and yet effective will take time. As a rule of thumb an online reputation management campaign can take anywhere between six to twelve months, on average.
